Delgado, Putz, F-Mart and MLBlogs

Mets GM Omar Minaya said today that the Mets will wait until Saturday or Sunday to make a decision on if Carlos Delgado will go on the DL. Acording to MetsblogSI.com‘s Jon Heyman has said on his twitter feed that Carlos Delgado is now feeling better after getting some medical treatment.
Heyman also said that the Mets won’t promote top prospect Fernando Martinez until at least June.
GM Minaya also said that a MRI on J.J. Putz said that he has inflammation in the back of his elbow. Metsblog said that Putz was in a hospital in New York today but he then went to San Fransico for tonight’s game against the Giants. The Mets have not said that he would play or wouldn’t play tonight. …update 6:39 PM: Adam Rubin of the Daily News is saying that Putz will be out for at least 2 days.
Putz has been really struggling after giving up a run last night. Putz has a ERA of 4.05 over the season.

Also on a completely unrelated note I don’t get why MLBlogs is making such a big deal about the June draft. It isn’t that soon and the MLB draft isn’t really that big. 1st round picks sometimes never make it to the majors and late round picks sometimes turn out to be all-stars. It really is very different then it is in the NBA and NFL.

Postgame: Pirates 3 at Mets 7 (Game 1)

Last night the Mets extended there 4 game win streak to 5 games as they beat the Pirates at Citi Field by a score of 7-3.

W- Bobby Parnell (1-0)
L – Tyler Yates (0-2)
Box Score/Recap:

At the Plate:
  • The Mets broke the 2-2 tie in the 8th by scoring 5 runs.
  • In the 8th, Reyes led off with a single. Then Castillo walked on 4 pitches. Then Beltran singled to score Reyes to take the lead. Then Delgado hit a 3 run homer. Then Wright gets out but Murphy doubles and Santos drives him in.
  • Every Met (including the pitcher Jonathan Niese) had at least one hit other then David Wright.

On the Mound:
  • Jonathan Niese started and pitched well through 6. Here was his line:
IP  H  R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA
    J Niese 6.0 7 2 2 0 5 0 95-67 3.00

  • Sean Green and Ken Takahashi combined to pitch a good 7th.
  • Bobby Parnell pitched a good 8th and got the win.
  • Then in the 9th with a 5 run lead J.J. Putz put himself into trouble but got out of it with only 1 run allowed.
Player of Game:
Carlos Delgado for hitting 3 for 4 and a home run.
Up Next:
Today at 1 PM the Mets will play the Pirates at Citi Field with John Maine on the mound. I am going to live blog it so come back for that at 1.

Mets at Phillies (Game 3) Rained Out

Todays rubber game against the Phillies has been rained out. No word has been said on when it will be played.

Also Carlos Delgado was in the lineup at first base today if there was a game.

Postgame: Mets 5 at Phillies 6 (Game 2)

Today the Mets lost in 10 innings at Citizen’s Bank Park to the Phillies by a score of 6-5.

W- Jack Taschner (1-0)
L – Sean Green (0-2)
Box Score/Recap:

At the Plate:
  • Daniel Murphy was 1 for 2 with a home run.
  • Ramon Castro followed his home run with one of his own and was 2 for 3 but was taken out as Omir Santo pinch ran for him.
  • Carlos Delgado was a pinch hitter and walked so it doesn’t look like he will be going to the DL. After Delgado walked they had pitcher John Maine pinch run for him so he must really not be able to run the bases since they brought a pitcher in to run for him.
On the Mound:
  • Bad Ollie showed up and went only 2 and 1/3 innings before being taken out. Hre was his line:
IP  H  R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA
    O Perez 2.1 5 4 4 6 2 0 77-36 9.97

  • Ken Takahashi relived him and went 2 and 2/3 innings giving up no runs.
  • Pedro Feliciano then came in and blew the 5-4 lead when he gave up a solo homer to Raul Ibanez.
  • Bobby Parnell then pitched a very good inning and J.J. Putz then threw 2 good innings.
  • In the 10th the Mets brought in Sean Green who put runners on 1st and 2nd with on out. Then got a strikeout. Then a walk to load the bases. Then he went down in the count 2-1 to Shane Victorino. Got him to swing at one in the dirt to even up the count. Then he threw one way outside and then he blew the game, giving up ball 4 high with the bases loaded, so the Mets lose.
My Opinion:
I thought that we would get a good outing from Ollie but was wrong. Now he might be sent to the minors to work on stuff. If I was the Mets I would sent him to Bufffalo for 2 or 3 starts and tell him that you will come back if you pitch well in Buffalo. Clear your head and start winning games again.

Player of Game: Raul Ibanez for tying te game in the 6th with his homer. He was 2 for 4.
Met of Game: Ken Takahashi for keeping the Mets in the game when Ollie couldn’t pitch.
Up Next:
The rubber game will be tomorrow. John Maine vs. Joe Blanton at 1 PM. The Mets will try to win their first series finale this year.

Lineups

On Wednesday, manager Jerry Manual made a interesting move in batting Daniel Murphy 3rd with Carlos Delgado hurt. Wednesday’s lineup was this:

Lineup Card
Reyes
Cora
Murphy
Beltran
Wright
Church
Tatis
Castro
Santana
Tonight the only difference is that Omir Santos is starting in place of Ramon Castro and that Mike Pelfrey is pitching. Jerry really doesn’t like Castro because Santos is catching every game except day games after night games like in Wednesday’s case.
I don’t like Murphy batting 2nd. As much of a Murphy fan I am, I like him in the 2 hole. Here is what I would do:

Reyes
Murphy
Wright or Beltan
(The other one)
Church
Tatis
Santos
Cora
Pelfrey
I want Murphy batting 2nd. Wright and Beltan batting 3 and 4 not 4 and 5. Then move everyone else up and bat Cora 8th. You can comment on what you think of this lineup and what you would do.

Postgame: Brewers 4 at Mets 5 (Game 1)

Today the Mets won in dramatic fashion against the Brewers at Citi Field.

W- J.J. Putz (1-0)
L – Seth McClung (0-1)
Box Score/Recap

At the Plate:
  • The Mets scored 3 runs in the first inning.
  • Gary Sheffield hit home run number 500 in his career and was the first Mets player to ever hit their 500th career home run in a Mets uniform.
  • In the 9th, Carlos Delgado leads off with a double. Then Carlos Beltran strikes out. Then Ryan Church is intentionally walked which brings up the catcher, Omir Santos, who came in when they pinch hit for Castro due to Schnieder going on the DL. Santos hits a ground ball so lightly hit that it isn’t a double play.
  • Then Luis Castillo comes up and hits a infield hit to J.J. Hardy and Delgado scores.
On the Mound:
  • Livan Hernandez was great the first time through the order but ran into trouble in the 5th and 6th. He gave up 4 runs through 5+.
  • The bullpen didn’t give up a run after that.
  • It only took J.J. Putz, 11 pitches to get through the 9th and earn the win.
My Thoughts:
I am not a big fan of Sheffield but congratulations on home run 500. I wasn’t expecting it so soon and it was very clutch Gary. Luis Castillo is starting to come back. He was doing what he should be doing in the 9th. Slap it the other way.

Player of Game:
The Player of Game goes to Gary Sheffield for being the first Mets player to reach 500 home runs as a Met.
Up Next:
Tomorrow the Mets will play the Brewers at 1:10.

Daily Scouting Report: Jackie Robinson

In today’s Daily Scouting Report, I will talk about what it would be like if Jackie Robinson was still alive.

  1. He would be 90.
  2. Most likely, Major League Baseball would not have retired his number on every team.
  3. Most likely, Citi Field doesn’t have a Jackie Robinson Rotunda,
  4. He would be harassed by the media today.
but what would have happened if he never existed.

  1. African Americans probably wouldn’t play in any sport which would make basketball very different.
  2. Hispanics might not be allowed in the MLB which would mean that:
  • No Jose Reyes
  • No Johan Santana
  • No Franky Rodriguez
  • No Carlos Delgado
  • No Oliver Perez (who I still trust)
  • No Livan Hernandez
  • No Carlos Beltran
  • No Gary Sheffield

Post Game: Mets 9 at Reds 7

In a long game last night the Mets beat the Reds 9-7 at Great American Ballpark.

W – Mike Pelfrey (1-0)
L – Edinson Volquez (0-1)
S – Francisco Rodriguez (2)

Box Score/Recap:

Presented from ESPN.

Box Score

Recap

At the Plate:

  • Carlos Delgado was 2 for 5 with a homer and 4 RBIs (not by a Grand Slam)
  • Carlos Beltran was 2 for 4 with a walk and 2 RBIs.
  • Brian Schneider was 2 for 4 with a walk and 3 RBIs. All of which came in the 7th inning when Schneider broke the game open with a 3 RBI double.
On the Rubber:

  • Mike Pelfrey started and went 5 innings. He gave up 4 runs, all of which were in the first. He walked 4, struck out 2 and ended up throwing 104 pitches (56 strikes)
  • Bobby Parnell followed by throwing a no hit scoreless inning although walking 2. Parnell might have pitched another inning but the Mets hit so well the following inning that they had to pinch hit for Parnell.
  • Pedro Feliciano followed and threw 2/3 of a inning giving up 2 runs.
  • Sean Green then game in to bail out Feliciano and he did that in one batter.
  • J.J. Putz then came in to pitch the 8th and he gave up his first run of the season.
  • Frankie Rodreiguez then came in for the 9th and had some control issues. He went 2-0 on every batter he faced. Frankie ended up throwing 30 pitches in his 1 inning of work. More on that later in the post.
Time of Game:
The game ended up going 3 hours and 56 minutes. In total the Mets walked 9 batters and the Reds walked 7 batters It will be a long game when in total 16 walks in the game and that goes with 2 mid-inning pitching changes.
The Bottom of the 9th:
In the bottom of the 9th, Brandon Phillips led of the inning with a walk. Frankie then got Jay Bruce to pop out. Then on a bad call, Edwin Encarnacion reached on a error by Carlos Delgado. What happened was that Phillips ran on the pitch, David Wright threw it to first and Brandon Phillips tries to go to 3rd so Carlos Delgado throws it to 3rd but the 1st base umpire, Bill Welkie, says that Delgado’s foot came off the bag when he caught it so he could throw it to 3rd. Brandon Phillips ends up getting to 3rd safely. Then a walk by Remon Hernandez loads the bases. Frankie then strikes out Alex Gonzalez and get Lance Nix to fly out to Center for the win.
K-Rod and Schnieder
Player of Game:

I am giving it to Carlos Delgado for his 4 RBIs although it could have easily gone to Carlos Beltran or Brian Schneider.

Up Next:

Today at 1 PM Oliver Perez will take the mound on SNY.

Postgame: Mets 2 at Reds 1 (Opening Day)

Today in Cincinnati, the Mets beat the Reds 2-1.

W – Johan Santana (1-0)
L – Aaron Harang (0-1)
S – Francisco Rodrigez (1)
Box Score/Recap
Presented from ESPN.
At the Plate:
  • Daniel Murphy hit a solo homer and then later drove in the 2nd run.
  • Ryan Church was 2 for 4 with a stolen base.
  • Carlos Delgado was 2 for 4 with a walk.
  • As a team the mets left 12 men on base. (not good)
On the Rubber:
  • Johan Santana went 5 2/3 innings giving up 3 hits, 1 run, struck out 7 but walked 4. He was removed after throwing 99 pitches.
  • Sean Green relived Johan and threw a perfect 1 1/3 innings.
  • J.J. Putz then pitched the 8th. He walked 11 and struck out 1.
  • K-Rod (but would like to be called Franky Rodrigez) pitched a perfect 9th, striking out 1 and earning his first save.
My Thoughts:
They won. That is the important thing. Johan walked too many but hopefully he will rebound. The team left wayyyyyyy too many runners on base.

Player of Game:
I am going to give the player of game to Daniel Murphy.
Up Next:
The Mets are off tomorrow and will play the Reds again on Wednesday with Pelfrey on the mound.
