Postgame: Nationals 8 at Mets 1 (Fail to Sweep)

The Mets today yet again failed to sweep their series as they lost to the Nationals 8-1 at Citi Field.

(This will not be a normal postgame report)

I was at the game and Ollie was not good butmy prediction is that he will do amazing next start in Phillie.
Ollie will make his next start on Friday against the Phillies, a team that Ollie has done really well against. Ollie only gave up 1 earned run against the Phillies last year.
Also some of the scoreboards broke. The strip scoreboard in left field that people were putting K-cards on last Friday was broken. (I guess the security people were right about it braking.) Then during the game the center field big scoreboard went completely off for about the first 2 innings of the game. Then it went on but there was a big strip of black in the middle so you couldn’t read anything on it. Then they put the Mets logo up so it wouldn’t be wasted. THen  the scoreboard tarted to work again but there was one black dot in the middle. The Mets then put the regular stuff on the scoreboard with that black dot there. Then it was all fixed for the rest of the game but by that time the Mets were completely out of it.
You would think this is a old stadium with all of this happening but Citi Field is brand new this year.
Also during the game the Mets had Casey Fossum pitch 2 1/3 innings. He did horrible in his first 1/3 of a inning but then settled in but the truth is that Casey Fossum stinks.
After the game, the Mets DFA’d Fossum and brought up left handed reliver Ken Takahashi from triple-A Buffalo. In Buffalo he had a 0.77 ERA in 11 2/3 innings.

Rubber Duck Trivia

Yesterday’s trivia goes to Donnie of The Season Experience for knowing that Sean Lamont of Geargetown hit the first home run at Citi Field. That gives him a big lead.

Today’s Question: 8 Points

Who was the first player to hit a home run at Citi Field in a live game. (Including the 3 games before the home opener.)

♠ I think this question will be hard so it is worth 8 points. If nobody gets it today then there will be the same question tomorrow but I will give some clues and lower the value of the question.

Daily Scouting Report: Jackie Robinson

In today’s Daily Scouting Report, I will talk about what it would be like if Jackie Robinson was still alive.

  1. He would be 90.
  2. Most likely, Major League Baseball would not have retired his number on every team.
  3. Most likely, Citi Field doesn’t have a Jackie Robinson Rotunda,
  4. He would be harassed by the media today.
but what would have happened if he never existed.

  1. African Americans probably wouldn’t play in any sport which would make basketball very different.
  2. Hispanics might not be allowed in the MLB which would mean that:
  • No Jose Reyes
  • No Johan Santana
  • No Franky Rodriguez
  • No Carlos Delgado
  • No Oliver Perez (who I still trust)
  • No Livan Hernandez
  • No Carlos Beltran
  • No Gary Sheffield

Blog and Dodgers

In honor of Jackie Robinson day, I have made my blog dodgers. I wish I could make it brooklyn Dodgers but that is not a option.

Also a lot of Citi Field is Dodgers.

Big Pelf, Museum

According to Newsday Mike Pelfrey had a MRI yesterday that revealed that Pelf had forearm tendonitis.

“This is not a big deal,” Pelfrey said. “I don’t want anybody to think that it is.”
Pelfrey said he usually gets this once or twice a year and the tendonitis usually lasts arounds two weeks.

In other news, Adam Rubin, is reporting that Fred Wilpon plans to add a Mets Hall of Fame Museum out in center field behind Shake Shack.

Postgame: Padres 6 at Mets 5 (Home Opener)

Last night the Mets lost to the Padres by a score of 5-4 in the first regular season game at Citi Field.

W- Edward Mujica (1-0)
L – Brian Stokes (0-1)
S – Heath Bell (4)
Box Score/Recap

At the Plate:
  • In the 5th inning, David Wright hit a very clutch 3 run homer for his 1st of the year.
  • Delgado, Church and Schnieder were the only ones not to get a hit.
In the Field:
  • Ryan Church dropped a fly ball in the 5th inning to lead to a run scoring.
On the Mound:
  • Mike Pelfrey struggled in the first inning but then settled down and went 5 (88 pitches).
  • After David Wright’s game tying home run, Pedro Feliciano balked in a run and there was no more scoring after that.
  • The Mets were hitless off Duaner Sanchez and Heath Bell.
The Stadium:
  • It still needs more concession stands. The lines are crazy.
  • The apple is much bigger when Wright hit that home run.
  • It is definitely a pitcher’s park. Maybe even more so then Shea.
  • If you are going then don’t enter in the rotunda. Security is way to high there and it is much better if you enter in the left or right field entrance.
Player of Game:
The Player of game goes to Jody Gerit for hitting the first ever home run at Citi Field.
The Met of game goes to David Wright bringing the team back in the 5th.
Up Next:
Off today then tomorrow night at Citi Field against the Padres, 7:10.

Daily Scouting Report: Gary Sheffield

Gary Sheffield has had 2 plate appearances this year. A strikeout last Thursday against the Reds and walk last Friday against the Marlins.

Sheffield is 1 home run shy of 500 so in all likelihood he will reach 500 as a Met. The question is: When will he get at bats?
Sheffield is yet to take the field for the Mets but Jerry Manual said that Sheffield should be in the lineup on Wednesday night against the Padres.
The problem is that it would mean not playing Ryan Church (.478 AVG, 2 RBIs, 6 doubles, .538 On Base Percentage) and play Gary Sheffield (0 for 1 this year, .225 AVG, 19 HR, 57 RBIs last season). It seems to me that Church has the hot hand and should continue to play especially against a right hand pitcher. (If it was a lefty pitching then it might make some sense.) If they rest Church for a day then that could put him in a slump. As much as I like Jerry, it seems that Sheff should stay on the bench. I didn’t like the move when it was made. Sheffield should have gone to extended spring training and not the Opening Day Roster.

My guess is that Sheffield will get booed tomorrow at Citi Field when he is announced and again on Wednesday when he is announced in the lineup.

ESPN Recap:

MIAMI – Josh Johnson‘s dominant outing was just enough to beat Johan Santana.

Johnson pitched a five-hitter for his second complete game in 45 career starts and the Florida Marlins scored two unearned runs to edge Santana and the Mets 2-1 Sunday, handing the New York ace his first loss since June 28.

While Johnson retired 15 batters in a row, Santana was just as good. The left-hander struck out 13 in seven innings, allowing only three hits. But left fielder Daniel Murphy dropped a two-out fly ball in the second for an error that led to both Florida runs.

Santana (1-1) had made 18 starts in a row without a loss, winning 10 consecutive decisions.

Johnson (2-0) struck out seven, walked one and threw 113 pitches in a fast-paced pitchers’ duel that took only 2 hours, 4 minutes.

The 6-foot-7 right-hander was one strike from a three-hit shutout when Carlos Delgado doubled in the ninth.Carlos Beltran followed with an RBI single before Ryan Church‘s soft liner was caught by left fielder Brett Carroll, who made a backhanded grab at the shoetops.

The Marlins totaled only three hits but ended their season-opening homestand at 5-1, the best start in franchise history. The Mets play their home opener Monday night against San Diego at new Citi Field.

Santana, who departed for a pinch hitter after throwing 98 pitches, walked only one and even managed to keep Jeremy Hermida on a 3-2 pitch. When Cody Ross lifted a high fly to deep left, Murphy retreated awkwardly to the warning track before the ball deflected off his glove, which allowed Hermida to score.

Ronny Paulino‘s single on the next pitch brought home Ross for a 2-0 lead.

Jose Reyes was the Mets’ lone baserunner until the sixth. He reached on a tapper to the pitcher to start the game when first baseman Wes Helms dropped Johnson’s throw for an error, but was thrown out trying to steal.

Luis Castillo ended Johnson’s no-hit bid in the sixth with a broken-bat single. Castillo advanced on a sacrifice, but Reyes grounded out to end the threat.

With the score 2-0, David Wright singled with one out in the seventh and Bonifacio bobbled a potential double-play grounder for an error that put the tying run aboard. But Johnson overcame the mistake, turning a comebacker by Beltran into a 1-6-3 double play, then heading for the dugout with a pump of his fist.

The Mets put runners at the corners with two outs in the eighth, but Reyes grounded back to Johnson.

Game notes
Marlins 1B Jorge Cantu, who had seven RBIs in the first five games, sat out after aggravating a bruise on his left hand. Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez said he expects Cantu back in the lineup for the team’s next game Tuesday at Atlanta. … The crowd of 18,104 included former Mets ace Dwight Gooden, who is also expected to be on hand Monday night for opening ceremonies at Citi Field.
