State of the Blog
Every once in a while i will have one of these State of the Blog where I will say what is going on with the blog and what is up ahead.
- I have stopped making the Daily Scouting Reports partly because I was running out of ideas to write about and I was not having much time to make them.
- The amount of people visiting the blog has gone down and I don’t think i will make the next latest leaders now. Come on people. Start visiting more for my opinion and news about the Mets and the MLB. Also tell people about this blog.
- I will also be adding a daily trivia question called the Rubber Duck Trivia. It comes from the Aflac Trivia question during Mets games on SNY. I also would like to give credit to the #1 Constant Baseball for inspiring me to do this. It will be a little different though. The questions will be more about the Mets. Below is the first Trivia Question:

Daily Scouting Report: Nelson Figueroa
Yesterday, the Mets said that Pelfrey will not make his start and Nelson Figueroa will. Originally the Mets said it might be Jonathan Niese or Dillon Gee but they decided against it because the Brewers have a lot of right hand hitters and Niese and Gee are left handers while Figueroa is a righty.
Figueroa, age 34, is 0-0 in 2 starts for the Bisons with a ERA of 3.00. Last year in the minors he was 4-7 with a 4.43 ERA.
Last year in the majors, he was 3-3 with a 4.57 ERA. In his major league career, he is 10-20 with a 4.67 ERA. Here are some pictures:

Daily Scouting Report: Jonathan Niese
The Mets say that they are unsure if Pelfrey will be able to make his start on Sunday. Jerry Manual has said that it will most likely be Jonathan Niese but possibly Dillon Gee. It would be Niese on normal rest or Gee on short rest by 1 day.
Jonathan Niese: 0-1 9.00 ERA in 2 starts
Dillon Gee: 0-2 4.66 ERA in 2 starts
Last year, Niese was 1-1 with a ERA of 7.07 in 3 starts. Niese has a lot more potential then that. I have a feeling he will have a nice carear.

Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus is reporting that Pelfrey will miss his next start and either Niese, Gee or Figueroa will make the start.
Daily Scouting Report: Jackie Robinson
In today’s Daily Scouting Report, I will talk about what it would be like if Jackie Robinson was still alive.
- He would be 90.
- Most likely, Major League Baseball would not have retired his number on every team.
- Most likely, Citi Field doesn’t have a Jackie Robinson Rotunda,
- He would be harassed by the media today.
but what would have happened if he never existed.
- African Americans probably wouldn’t play in any sport which would make basketball very different.
- Hispanics might not be allowed in the MLB which would mean that:
- No Jose Reyes
- No Johan Santana
- No Franky Rodriguez
- No Carlos Delgado
- No Oliver Perez (who I still trust)
- No Livan Hernandez
- No Carlos Beltran
- No Gary Sheffield
Daily Scouting Report: Billy Wagner
In my post today about Wagner, I said that Wagner was throwing today. The question is: How will he do and in what roll?
Wagner to Putz to Franky would probably be the best bullpen ever if Wagner does what he did early in his career.Coming off Tommy John Surgery means that he probably won’t do it but he has reasons to try:
- Wagner most likely won’t be with the team next year and wants to prove that he is good to other teams.
- (Hopefully more importantly) he wants to win a World Series.
Wagner is saying he will be back in late-July or early-August while the Mets are saying late-August at the earliest. This saying that don’t expect him back until at least mid-August if ever. My guess is that the team doesn’t want to rush him back. That makes sense if Putz and Franky perform like they should. If they don’t then the team probably will rush him back and he will get hurt again.
If or when he comes back, my guess is that he won’t do so well and the team will end up pitching Sean Green ahead of him in the 7th.
Daily Scouting Report: Gary Sheffield
Gary Sheffield has had 2 plate appearances this year. A strikeout last Thursday against the Reds and walk last Friday against the Marlins.
Sheffield is 1 home run shy of 500 so in all likelihood he will reach 500 as a Met. The question is: When will he get at bats?
Sheffield is yet to take the field for the Mets but Jerry Manual said that Sheffield should be in the lineup on Wednesday night against the Padres.
The problem is that it would mean not playing Ryan Church (.478 AVG, 2 RBIs, 6 doubles, .538 On Base Percentage) and play Gary Sheffield (0 for 1 this year, .225 AVG, 19 HR, 57 RBIs last season). It seems to me that Church has the hot hand and should continue to play especially against a right hand pitcher. (If it was a lefty pitching then it might make some sense.) If they rest Church for a day then that could put him in a slump. As much as I like Jerry, it seems that Sheff should stay on the bench. I didn’t like the move when it was made. Sheffield should have gone to extended spring training and not the Opening Day Roster.
My guess is that Sheffield will get booed tomorrow at Citi Field when he is announced and again on Wednesday when he is announced in the lineup.
Daily Scouting Report: Luis Castillo
Last night, Castillo was 0 for 4 with a strikeout.
This season, Castillo is 1 for 10.
Today I was listening to Evan Roberts on WFAN and he was crazy about Castillo while making some good points. He said that Jerry Manual knows he is dis-liked by the fans. Roberts also said that he is dis-liked by Jerry Manual. His evidence for that was that he didn’t play on Thursday and he was pinch hit for yesterday. He said that most people thought he didn’t play Thursday because he is old and it was a day game after a night game. Roberts said that he didn’t buy that. He said, it is the 3rd game of the season and he played every day in spring training during day games.
I was assuming that he didn’t play for day game after night game but Roberts made a very good point.
Later in the show, a caller comes on saying that Castillo should bat leadoff or second. Roberts basically just said that it was a bad idea because you don’t want to be moving Reyes and Murphy is doing so well batting second. Roberts said that Castillo should bat 8th or 9th.
I agree. You don’t want to move Reyes or Murphy. THis also goes back to my post I wrote in spring training about Castillo batting 9th. Here it is.

Daily Scouting Report: Chicago Cubs
I was going to write about the team that won the Playoff Bracket but the Red Sox won and I have already scouted them so here is the runner up Cubs.
In the World Series of the Playoff Bracket, the Red Sox got 56% and the Cubs 46%.
My Predictions: NL Central Winner, Lose in NLDS, Record: 92-70
Playoff Bracket: NL Central Winner, Beat Phillies, Beat Mets, Lose to Red Sox
The Cubs are currently 2-1. All games were in Houston.
The Cubs this year got Milton Bradley from the Texas Rangers. This gives them more power. They also got Aaron Heilman from the Seattle Mariners after the Mets traded him there. Heilman will be starting for the Cubs. Something the Mets should have done a long time ago. My guess is that he will beat up the Mets when they face us.
