Postgame: Brewers 4 at Mets 5 (Game 1)

Today the Mets won in dramatic fashion against the Brewers at Citi Field.

W- J.J. Putz (1-0)
L – Seth McClung (0-1)
Box Score/Recap

At the Plate:
  • The Mets scored 3 runs in the first inning.
  • Gary Sheffield hit home run number 500 in his career and was the first Mets player to ever hit their 500th career home run in a Mets uniform.
  • In the 9th, Carlos Delgado leads off with a double. Then Carlos Beltran strikes out. Then Ryan Church is intentionally walked which brings up the catcher, Omir Santos, who came in when they pinch hit for Castro due to Schnieder going on the DL. Santos hits a ground ball so lightly hit that it isn’t a double play.
  • Then Luis Castillo comes up and hits a infield hit to J.J. Hardy and Delgado scores.
On the Mound:
  • Livan Hernandez was great the first time through the order but ran into trouble in the 5th and 6th. He gave up 4 runs through 5+.
  • The bullpen didn’t give up a run after that.
  • It only took J.J. Putz, 11 pitches to get through the 9th and earn the win.
My Thoughts:
I am not a big fan of Sheffield but congratulations on home run 500. I wasn’t expecting it so soon and it was very clutch Gary. Luis Castillo is starting to come back. He was doing what he should be doing in the 9th. Slap it the other way.

Player of Game:
The Player of Game goes to Gary Sheffield for being the first Mets player to reach 500 home runs as a Met.

Postgame: Mets 8 Marlins 4

Last Night the Mets (3-2) beat the Marlins (4-1) 8-4 in Miami.

W- Livan Hernandez (1-0)

At the Plate:
  • After taking early BP with Jerry Manual, Luis Castillo goes 4 for 4.
  • Jose Reyes hit his first home run of the year.
  • The Mets were 5 for 14 with runners in scoring position (.357) which is much better then the previous day at 1 for 10 (.100).
On the Mound:
  • Livan Hernandez was good. Here is his line:

  • Brian Stokes then pitched to one batter and gave up a hit. He was then relieved by Pedro Feliciano who finished the inning.
  • Darron O’Day then pitched a good 8th inning but struggled in the 9th so they brought in Franky Rodriguez in a non-save situation and he got the job done.
  • This was the first game for the Mets this year that a starting Pitcher went 6 or more innings.
My Thoughts:
It was a good game for Livan. If it was late in the season then Livan doesn’t come out. It is good to see that Castillo had a amazing game but lets see if he can do it again today because if he can then he may not be boooed on Monday at Citi Field.

Player of Game:
Luis Castillo for going 4 for 4 and responding to Jerry Manual.
Up Next:
Today will be the rubber game at Dolphin Stadium with Johan Santana going against Josh Johnson. The game will be at 1:10 PM on SNY.

Castillo is somehow 3 for 3 and drove in Church. Castillo took early BP with Jerry Manual before today’s game. Jerry said that he was taking too many pitches.

Marlins on the board by a pinch hit by Wes Helms. Livan’s day is done. 6 2/3, 1 run (2 on base), 6 hits, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts.

Bonafacio gets a hit and Stokes comes out. Normal Jerry although it is Willie style.

Feliciano comes in and gets the job done. To the 8th.

Daily Scouting Report: Luis Castillo

Last night, Castillo was 0 for 4 with a strikeout.Castillo Lineup

This season, Castillo is 1 for 10.
Today I was listening to Evan Roberts on WFAN and he was crazy about Castillo while making some good points. He said that Jerry Manual knows he is dis-liked by the fans. Roberts also said that he is dis-liked by Jerry Manual. His evidence for that was that he didn’t play on Thursday and he was pinch hit for yesterday. He said that most people thought he didn’t play Thursday because he is old and it was a day game after a night game. Roberts said that he didn’t buy that. He said, it is the 3rd game of the season and he played every day in spring training during day games.
I was assuming that he didn’t play for day game after night game but Roberts made a very good point.

Later in the show, a caller comes on saying that Castillo should bat leadoff or second. Roberts basically just said that it was a bad idea because you don’t want to be moving Reyes and Murphy is doing so well batting second. Roberts said that Castillo should bat 8th or 9th.
I agree. You don’t want to move Reyes or Murphy. THis also goes back to my post I wrote in spring training about Castillo batting 9th. Here it is.

Daily Scouting Report: Jonathan Malo

Jonathan Malo was a name not many people knew before this year. He ended up coming in late in spring training games this year.

He probably won’t be a superstar but if Luis Castillo struggles then he might get the call.
Malo spend last last year in Binghamton and hit .260 with 4 homers, 30 RBIs in 273 ABs (99 games)
Malo will need to develop a little power to make the MLB and he will also need to raise that batting average.

Castillo 9th

Ed Coleman on WFAN said that he asked Jerry Manual about batting Castillo 9th. Manual responded by saying that he was thinking about trying it.

In a inter-league game with a DH it makes sense but to do that in a NL game wouldn’t make much sense. Batting the pitcher 8th is not a very good idea. Late in a game he could get a extra at bat and then the Mets are forced to use a pinch hitter. I see that it would make sense to bat Castillo before Reyes but I don’t think it will happen or it is very smart.

There are ways this could happen:
  • Tony LaRusa becomes manager.
  • Livan Hernandez is pitching.
  • I can’t think of anymore.
